I, Dr. Peter Kadar, have been treating patients with ear (auricular) acupuncture for many years and have continued to be impressed and surprised by the simplicity and wide-ranging efficacy of this acupuncture technique. It is one of the easiest ways to create rapid therapeutic results because the sensitivity of the acupuncture points in the ear communicates immediately with the centers of the brain that control all the body’s functions. I first learned ear acupuncture as a result of its success in the early days of acupuncture in the U. S. as a treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. It proved to be a very effective, non-pharmaceutical treatment for addictions of all types. Ear acupuncture has gradually developed to include treatment for a wide variety of disorders – from asthma and pain symptoms to hormonal imbalances, weight loss and neurological diseases. A great deal of research has taken place that validates it use as an effective acupuncture procedure, sometimes even as a stand-alone treatment and sometimes in conjunction with more traditional body/meridian acupuncture. There are hundreds of points on the ear that stimulate very organ, gland, structure and system in the body.
I find that the greatest benefit to my patients is often in the powerful relaxation and stress-relief response that is elicited by inserting fine needles in the ear. I begin almost all acupuncture treatments with the ear acu-point Shenmen or “spirit gate”. This point stimulates the rapid release of endorphins and other neuro-transmitter that have an almost immediate effect in relaxing the patient and opening the nervous or meridian system to be more responsive to the insertion of acupuncture needles. I will often add other points that correspond to the patient’s needs. For example, if a female patient is being treated for fertility support I will include ear points for the uterus and her endocrine glands. If a patient is suffering with colitis or chronic indigestion I will add the ear points for stomach and intestines.
For patients suffering from anxiety, stress, PTSD, psychological disorders such as ADHD, depression, or bipolar disorder I will often go back to the original 5 point ear acupuncture treatment that I learned many years ago. I am currently helping a young patient detox from alcohol addiction in conjunction with his regular counseling program and he’s having great success!
