In the 1970’s Peter Kadar was a student at the University of New York in Buffalo who needed an elective to fill out his schedule. In a stroke of fate, he decided to follow a vague interest and signed up for a class in Eastern Philosophy. That seemingly inconsequential decision ended up setting the course for the rest of his life. He became fascinated by this ancient way of understanding the world and was hungry to learn more. During his remaining time at Buffalo, he took every course he could on the subject, and attended lectures by luminaries like Alan Watts.
After graduating, he decided to turn down an acceptance at Harvard’s School of East Asian Studies in favor of an education at the newly opened New England School of Acupuncture – at the time the only school in the country teaching acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Peter saw that his path was in healing, instead of academia. Even at that early stage, he saw the limitations of the Western medical system, and wanted to create a place where healing was focused on the patient, not on the disease.
At New England School of Acupuncture, Peter met and fell in love with a fellow student, Lisa. After graduating, they got married. Upon Peter’s return from studying in Beijing for 6 months and overcoming the various legal hurdles of practicing an up to then unheard of medicine in the US, Peter and Lisa opened the Acupuncture Center of New Jersey in 1987 in a small office on Elm Street.
Since then, the Center has grown significantly, due to Peter and Lisa’s dedication and the wonderful results patients were feeling. The practice moved to the current location, a charming Victorian house a block away from downtown Morristown, in 1994 and expanded to a staff of multiple experienced acupuncturists who represent the wide range of training, styles and techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In January of 2021, In the height of the Covid 19 pandemic, Peter and Lisa’s son, Lucas Kadar joined the practice as a Licensed Acupuncturist. His passion to continue and progress the work of his parents ensures that the Acupuncture Center will continue to serve the health of our extended New Jersey community in years to come.
